What‘s Boogie Funk? 更会蹦迪一点点系列

如果咱们得选一个“黄金时期”来定义纯Funk音乐的话，那一定得是1960-70年代了。纯粹的Funk音乐无疑在上世纪60-70年代达到顶峰，但它也分化为多种音乐类型—— Disco、Psychedelic Funk Rock、Hip Hop、House、Electro等。后来又出现了City Pop、Gangsta Funk（G-Funk）和 Boogie Funk。

最初的Hip Hop和House音乐，还有Techno和Drum n Bass的曲目，大多数都是从老Funk唱片中取样的——即DJ们用Funk唱片的"Break Beats"造出新的、现场版本的、自由风格的"歌曲"；制作人则用采样机截取并重新利用Funk歌曲的元素。

Pure funk music's peak time was certainly the 1960s-70s, but it branched off into a variety of genres -- disco, psychedelic funk rock, hip hop, house, electro -- and then later, City Pop, Gangsta Funk (G-Funk), and Boogie Funk.  

Most of the first hip hop and house music, and even techno and drum n bass records, sampled older funk records -- DJs would play "break beats" from funk records to create new, live, freestyle "songs", and producers used sampler machines to cut out and re-use elements of funk songs.

不过，讨论音乐的时间线总是让人觉得有些可笑，因为说某首歌或某个人是第一个做某事的，总感觉过于简单化了——实际总要比这个复杂得多，也要微妙得多。

不过，如果非要给“Boogie Funk”这个类型选个代表作的话，我们可能会挑1974年Kool & The Gang的那首经典之作——"Jungle Boogie"。

When talking about music timelines, it's always silly to say one song or one artist was the first to do something -- it's always a more complex, nuanced story.

But if we have to pick a blueprint for the "Boogie Funk" genre, we'd say the classic by Kool & The Gang - Jungle Boogie from 1974.

到了80年代，在 Disco 音乐受到重创后（这个话题就大了去了，咱们改天再聊），Funk 和Disco 音乐更倾向于走地下路线，继而各种子流派浮出水。比如post-disco, electro-funk, proto-house, post-punk, blue-eyed soul / yacht rock, 还有就是 boogie funk.。

来，一起欣赏一支诞生于1982年、开创性MV：Zapp - "I Can Make You Dance"。

主唱Roger使用了“talkbox”这玩意儿：就是一根塑料管子插进歌手嘴里，然后接到一个键盘上，使得歌手可以用他的声音“演奏”音符。Talkbox后来也成为了Boogie Funk的标志性工具之一 （见下图）。

In the 1980s, after disco's backlash (that's a lot to unpack, for another article), funk and disco music went more underground, then resurged in a variety of sub-genres -- post-disco, electro-funk, proto-house, post-punk, blue-eyed soul / yacht rock, and boogie funk.

Check out the video from 1982's Zapp - I Can Make You Dance (Official Music Video). The singer Roger uses the "talkbox" instrument -- a plastic tube put into the singer's mouth, then routed to a keyboard, so the singer could "play notes" with the sound of his voice. The talkbox would become one of the signature tools of the Boogie Funk sound（shown as below).

Boogie Funk一直保持着那么一丝神秘的地下风格。直到90年代初Snoop Dogg从老的Boogie Funk唱片中抽样，加上点巧妙的文字游戏，就带领着Boogie Funk走向了主流（虽然原创者们基本没咋被提及）。

Boogie Funk remained an underground sound until early 1990s, when Snoop Dogg basically sampled his entire output from older boogie funk records, put some clever word play on top, and the sound went mainstream (to little acclaim by the originators).

后来到了2010年代，像Dam-Funk、Chromeo和Daft Punk这些行为艺术家，为Boogie Funk注入了重生的血液，并向其历史有了更多致敬。

Then, in the 2010s, acts like Dam-Funk, Chromeo, and Daft Punk re-invigorated the sound, and paid more homage to the sound's history.  

最后，让我们聊聊当下最火的Boogie Funk音乐人之一，XL Middleton（来自洛杉矶的Pasadena，就像 Dam Funk 和许多其他Boogie Funk音乐人和DJ一样）。

还有，与Dam Funk一样，XL Middleton的表演是一种混合形式——从珍贵的黑胶唱片到现场的键盘和原创人声，再回到黑胶唱片。这种随意的、轻松的流动是这个流派特有的。必须要亲自去现场感受才知道！

Finally, we get to one of the hottest current boogie funk artists today, XL Middleton (from Pasadena, LA, like Dam Funk and many other boogie funk artists and DJs).  Also like Dam Funk, XL Middleton's sets are a hybrid -- going from rare vinyl records to live keyboards and original vocals, and back to vinyl records.  It's a casual, mellow flow that's unique to the genre, and needs to be witnessed live.
